courtney barnett feat. Waxahatchee – Site Unseen

Courtney Barnett’s fourth album “Creature of Habit” arrives March 27, marking a turning point after relocating from Australia to Los Angeles and closing her long-running label Milk! Records. The 10-track record tackles a central question: how do you get out of your own way to truly feel life? Written during upheaval that put both her personal life and career in question, Barnett channelled all that confusion directly into the recording process.

“Site Unseen” features Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee on harmonies. Barnett tried recording the song three separate times over two years, but something always felt wrong; either the track wasn’t finished or the sound wasn’t right. She kept hearing a high harmony in her head, so for the fourth attempt, she asked Crutchfield to sing with her. “I’m a big Waxahatchee fan. I really love Katie’s songwriting and her voice, so it was an honour to have her sing on ‘Site Unseen,'” Barnett says.

The song captures the openness and acceptance of change that runs through the entire album. Barnett sings about letting go of what might have been, staying another year if things feel right, figuring out the rest later. It’s the same perceptive lyricism that’s drawn listeners in since her 2015 breakthrough, delivered with her characteristic directness.

The album follows 2021’s “Things Take Time, Take Time” and 2023’s instrumental soundtrack “End of the Day”, composed with Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa for the documentary “Anonymous Club”. Barnett remains one of modern guitar rock’s most vital voices—restless, self-reflective, finding new ways to connect with the moment.

The “Site Unseen” video, directed by Juliana and Nicola Giraffe, shows two women running through fields and city streets, swapping red heels for sneakers, crashing a bizarre wedding, getting caught up in colourful chaos. Pure lightness.
